Welcome to the UN family. After this wonderful time at the UN we decided to create this blog. We, the 2006 Reham Al Farra fellowship, want to share with others what we have obtained from this training. Visiting Journalists - September 2006
By: Mike Grela, fall intern
The United Nations Reham Al-Farrar Memorial Journalist Programme
was held this past September 22-25, 2006 and featured journalists from
fourteen different countries. The weekend involved the journalists taking
time away from their activities at the United Nations Headquarters in New
York City to visit Rochester and our surrounding areas. Graciously, families
in the area opened their homes and lives for the time that the journalists were
here. The weekend started with an informal luncheon at Nazareth College
where the journalists had an opportunity to introduce themselves and meet
faculty members and students of Nazareth’s Multicultural Office. Also in
attendance were representatives of UNAR and, Les Knox, coordinator of the
overall Visiting Journalists Programme. While the journalists were here they
had the opportunity to tour the George Eastman House, visit the Democrat
and Chronicle, attend a breakfast sponsored by the local Association of
Black Journalists, and experience the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls.
Another highlight included a trip to Brown’s Berry Patch where they had a
chance to explore a New York State apple orchard. On Saturday evening a
dinner was held in Medaille Hall at Nazareth College where the journalists
had an opportunity to present information about their country, and speak
about issues that they deal with in their profession. The dinner was a great
chance for everyone to learn more about the featured cultures, enjoy great
food, field questions to the journalists, and thank everyone who was a part of
their experience in Rochester. Each evening one of the host families was
gracious enough to open up their homes to all the journalists and their
families. The evenings were filled with more food, NY wine and even a bit
of dancing. Before leaving for NYC, the journalists spent a morning
attending journalism classes at SUNY Brockport. We would like to thank all
of the host families for their generous contribution throughout the weekend.
We could not have done it without you! In addition, we couldn’t have done
some of the activities without the support from Wegmans and the Greater
Rochester Visitors Association, Inc. Thank you.
The journalists and their host families included: Siarhei Aliasksandr Kuzniatsou
of Belarus and Elona Meco of Albania, hosted by Jack and Kathleen Fraser. Hicham
Benjamaa of Morocco, hosted by Mike and Trish Harren. Luisiana Rios of

Onitiana Voahariniaina Realy of Madagascar, hosted by Irene Kusmierz. Buthaina
